  • Ever seen "Vikings" series? Bullshit. THIS is what actually happened whenever the barbarians dared to fight the civilized face to face without cheating. Our modern civilization is based on Rome, while norse, gauls and germanics couldn't even learn to read and write, nor preserve their culture, nor even keep America after discovering it. Rome was the Real Deal. Deal with it, suckers.

    Javi SánchezJavi SánchezMåned siden
    • Sadly though, in movies these days the Romans are seen as oppressors and dictators. Not worthy of credit for the amount of civilisation they brought. And script writers have to make the audience feel like the barbarians are the good guys because they fight for their so called freedom. Even though most barbarians back then were more set on killing and raping then learning.

  • This movie was historically inaccurate as fuck, but it makes up for that by being incredibly boring too. Terrible, empty, soulless dialogue with an invincible and overpowered protagonist that has a generic personality and always overpowers any enemy. Some of the weapons used in the collosseum look straight out of Conan the Barbarian, not Rome, or are just otherwise terribly anachronistic.

    NomfrenNomfrenMåned siden
    • @Cactus Danimator @Cactus Danimator The fact that they were in an arena and not the collosseum does in no way suggest that they are arming the combatants with warhammers and ball and chains because the entire point I was making was that those weapons didn't even exist in antiquity, so your point doesn't make sense here. As for your other arguments, they are about equal in stupidity to this first one you made, so I am not going to dignify them with detailed responses, but just know thay you equated the quality of a movie with how much money it makes in the box office. Christ.

      NomfrenNomfrenMåned siden
    • @Nomfren First off, if you're going to whinge and moan about something you don't like then don't take it out on other people's tastes. Second, your criticism on the weapons is mostly valid. However you keep saying they used maces, war hammers and ball and chains in the COLOSSEUM. They did not. It was in a smaller arena in a roman province on the outskirts of the empire. Which could suggest that in those more savage lands they arm their gladiators with more robust weapons instead of just the standard roman ones. Third, the story is not just driven by a man trying to restore a roman republic, its also a revenge story about a man who's lost everything and is fighting to survive so he can have justice. Forth, when his identity is revealed he is more then just a gladiator at that point. If you remember in the scene when he is revealed, he becomes more powerful then the emperor himself when the crowd cheer for him to be spared. So saying he has no voice in the end that he's equal to a prostitute is invalid. And while you say you can forgive all these historic inaccuracies, just saying the movie was in no way ANY GOOD, is just you being as closed minded as an old man. Considering that this movie did very well at the box office and is still held in high regard to this day speaks for itself. So it must have at least done some GOOD things. Fifth, the escape scene where Marcus takes out 4 pretorians (you said 5 by the way) is not driven by plot armour. Marcus was able to kill them and escape because he is a character built to be a skilled soldier with years of experience in battle. And even then he doesn't win unscathed. He takes a nasty wound to the shoulder which takes weeks if not months to heal (if you observe the amount of time that went by in the movie) If he was truly invincible then he could have killed all 4 men without a scratch (which he didn't) As for your final comment on saying this movie is just for people with a power fantasy is just your own opinion which is baseless and arrogant. This movie clearly means more then that to people. Just not you for whatever reason.

      Cactus DanimatorCactus DanimatorMåned siden
    • @Cactus Danimator >Its hard to say all that without backing it up. Fine, didnt feel like I needed to back it up but, lets get into it then. One of the weapons used was a ball and chain. Which, if it even existed at all, wouldnt have been a weapon even depicted in artwork until the middle ages, yet it was being used prominently in the movie during the collosseum fight scenes. It CERTAINLY would not have been used in antiquity, if it was ever used at all, which it probably was not as it is extremely dangerous to the user to wield. Weapons like this only exist in fantasy fiction settings like Lord of the Rings of Conan the Barbarian. You know what else wouldnt have been used in antiquity? Maces and warhammers, which were characteristically an anti-armor weapon, also not employed until the middle ages. Yet here they were being used in collosseum fights. Also, the entire driving plot of the movie is that Marcus Aurelius wants to return Rome to a republic. This has not been true for any Emperor. Only after an Emperor's death was the SENATE the ones to vy for a return to the Roman republic. Which, of course, it never did. As the senate never took decisive action due to not being backed by the praetorian class, who depended on the Emperor for their funding. And Rome certainly would not have returned to a republic by the heartfelt speech of a gladiator, who in Rome, was considered about of equal value to a prostitute. I could forgive all of these historical innacuracies if the movie was just in any way GOOD. But one of the first scenes of the movie was the protagonist being taken off into woods and singlehandedly murdering 5 different soldiers, one on horseback, while handcuffed, and on his knees with a gladius pointed down his neck. Talk about plot armor. This is a movie for people with a power fantasy, nothing more.

      NomfrenNomfrenMåned siden
    • Sheesh.....hard to say all that without backing it up. Sure movies are historically inaccurate all the time, but at least the story drives the audience forwards. What do you mean the weapons look like they were from Conan the Barbarian?? In what way?
