In and out, in and out. Staying alive is about doing things. This very second, your cells are combusting glucose molecules with oxygen to make energy available, which keeps you alive for another precious moment. To get the oxygen to your cells you are breathing.
Breathing is an answer to a very hard problem: How do you get the resources that your cells need to survive, from the outside, to the inside of your cells? Every living thing has to solve this problem and the solution is surprisingly different depending on one of the most important regulators of life: Size.

  • Still the question in the title was not answered... I just looked it up. The largest bacterium ever discovered, at least, is 0.1-0.3 mm in diameter, sometimes attaining 0.75 mm. It's called Thiomargarita namibiensis and it is large enough to be visible to the naked eye. I'd call that pretty impressive!

  • Kurzgesagt should be ashamed to support Evolution when it is just merely a theory that will not ever be proven. The reason is because everything is based on a design and thus there is a designer behind the design(s). Life was based on a design and thus, there is a designer behind it!

  • Well, I think Kurzgesagt might have messed up with a chicken-or-egg problem. It was because single cell organisms started forming colonies and eventually into multicellular organisms that they gained an advantage, but not the other way round. Going multicellular has nothing to do with larger individual cells.

  • It's actually a scary lot like programming when you really think about it. A lot of modern developers wouldn't understand because they don't realise the amount of syntactic sugar, which would be a full human for example, while older developers had to still "build" that human with all those tiny clumps of cells. In the end, the syntactic sugar (modern functions you can just call upon whenever you want) is actually just a wrapper for a lot of pre-made functions. So, very much like a 'human', said functions still go back to the very roots of programming, which is 0's and 1's... Bits. These bits get clumped together per 8, to make a byte (compareable to a cluster of cells). Every pre-made programming function really isn't anything other than if statements and loops. "If 1 then " and "if 0 then", repeated thousands of times (loops) to eventually pretend as if "stuff just works". Much like how we don't actually see our bodies working and how many extremely basic stuff happens on a small scale, to eventually connect it all into one big scale working thing, is how syntactic sugar works for programming.
