  • Hi Alec, if you need it, you can have some adult formation in Paris (FR) to have a great base of jewellery formation. As a french jeweller, maybe if you got some questions, you can ask me when you want. And i heard one time you can hunderstand french as i understand english =)

  • this seems so much harder than it has to be... It might not be quite the effect you wanted, but I would just 3D print a model of the handle, make a mold with greensand, and use a foundry to heat up and pour molten bronze/copper/aluminum/etc. in. Is there something I'm missing...?

  • Your ham-handed grinding could be fixed by filling in the area with a TiG weld. And the fuller grinding could have been better rather than pulling the blank towards you. Push it away from you and give yourself a more steady pace and pressure.

  • I’m learning quite a bit about these processes by watching your channel. I’ve had a little experience with die grinders and carbide end mills and/or burrs in my profession as an industrial maintenance tech. I’ve found that with any rotary tool it naturally wants to pull in one direction over the other due to it spinning in one direction. Anyways to the point: I suggest trying to orient your project and or tool so that this inherent “pull” works in your favor. In the case of the fuller that orientation would be perpendicular to the length of the fuller. That way if there’s a momentary lack of attention or you just run into the tool biting a little too hard the tool will want to pull in the direction of the fuller and would be easier to correct if not hidden all together by further tooling. A very long winded suggestion I realize but just wanted to offer some advice that’s helped me in the past. Glad I discovered your content and hope to continue learning by tuning in. 👍

  • I know you're in the UK at the moment and don't have all your equipment, but investment casting the handle would be much easier. Especially as the risk of slipping and messing up the piece is really high when its carved straight into the metal. You can add on more wax but you can't weld the metal back on

  • Every time I used to tune into this channel I was amazed at how far and how fast Alec, with the help of Will, turned that Montana shop into one of the finest high tech blacksmith shops in the country. It is a testament to what is possible when you are focused on a goal and are willing to put whatever effort it takes to accomplish that goal. It is also amazing to see what happens when you introduce one variable into that formula and lose that focus. Will is gone, the Montana shop has been abandoned, and Alec is back in an old shop he left behind in England to struggle alone using equipment from the old Soviet empire to complete projects. Well, at least the wife is happy, right?

  • I know this may be more work, but the handle couldn't it have been just cast? You could've had all the details in on the wax and then pour in the metal,. Granted Wilhite still have to clean it up but arroyo probably be easier going that route than trying to hand carve metal

Thankyou for pushing through challenges and show all your viewers like myself that any challenge can be made fun with a positive attitude and always strive to learn and also be open to mistakes or bumps along the way. I’m the same age as you and started watching you when I was 14. You’re helped me continue to push my electrical career after I got my ticket at 19 and now pushing to go to university.
