We created our first app ‘Universe in a Nutshell’, together with Tim Urban of Wait but Why! You can get it here: Appstore: kgs.link/universe-app-ios Google Playstore: kgs.link/universe-app-android Oh boy. Making an app is hard. It seemed so easy when we started. We underestimated the necessary work load and all the potential problems tenfold - this is not a figure of speech, this took ten times longer than we thought it would. And we are sort of used to working on big projects. So the first update to the app should hopefully be here in the next 24 hours (we are waiting for approval of the update in the app stores) - it will fix a bunch of small things that slipped through. We’ll constantly improve this thing because while it was honestly a horrible nightmare to make, it also was fun and we want to get better at it and make more things in the future. In case you don’t know Wait but Why btw, it is the best and most fun blog on the internet (waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/universe.html) and if you don’t know it you should change that like right now. Tim and I collaborated for the first time in 2013 and we have been good friends ever since. And this thing was something we started talking about years ago. So what is this thing we made and why? You can seamlessly travel from the smallest things in existence, past the coronavirus, human cells and dinosaurs all the way to the largest stars and galaxies and marvel at the whole observable universe. You can learn more about each object or simply enjoy the sheer scale of it all. It’s a fun plaything. The app is inspired by the “scale of the universe” website by the Huang Twins that Tim and I spent a lot of time with when it came out years ago - and felt that it was finally time to create a Wait but Why and Kurzgesagt version. There are no in-app purchases and no ads. All future updates are included! Since this is our first app we would love to hear your feedback so we can improve it over time. Leave us a five star review if you want to support it. Kurzgesagt and all the projects we do are mostly funded by viewers like you. So if you like the app we’ll make more digital things in future! Ok! Thank you for reading - Philipp
Pls dont keep it paid as i cant download it then
This is not free on Appstore.

Why do you have to be so mean to those useless utterly disgust ing dissappointment?😔
Something I love to think about: In the night's starry sky, look up at the stars; some stars are visible to the naked eye despite being over 10,000 lightyears away. Imagine that star. It lets off a single light particle. Just as it was ejecting that single seemingly insignificant particle, our race was in the stone age. We advanced to the bronze age, we began to build cities and civilizations, developed tools and weapons. Cultures and dynasties that would come and go- lost to time. Nations built and nations crumbled. Ancient Rome would rise and fall. The dark ages, the middle ages, the renaissance. The founding of the Americas, the world wars, the cold war, the 90s, the 00s, 10s, 20s. And today, with you walking outside taking a moment to look up. Streaking through space, that particle missed countless obstacles, its path is bended and changed through gravitational forces with the course bent again by our sun's gravity in such a way that it, against all odds strikes your eye, 10,000 years after it began, to give you an image that’s older than mankind’s written history.
And just when I thought UY Scuti was huge, Mr. Stephenson had to step in LOL 😅☀️!

Just to clarify something said towards the end: stars explode and give their energy back to the universe so that other stars can be created. If stars are constantly being created via the death of other stars, does that mean the universe won't go dark as we're often told?
Eventually, everything will be perfectly evenly distributed in such a way that gas simply cannot gather into stars. Not to mention most matter will become heavier until they become iron, which are basically dead ends.
That "a huge disappointment to there moms" Really hits hard

@kurzgesagt Little mistake: „the fastest plane on earth [Lockheed SR-71]. The Lockheed A-12 was faster - as they look rather the same it would be great if you could just correct the name there.

"To make the biggest stars, we have to kill them" Black Holes: OOH EXTRA MEAL!!
To be honest, not even close to the largest but largest we've discovered
My ass is the size of the moon.
MY BRAIN YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS. ME BRAIN IS RIGHT NO ONE MESSES WITH UY SCUTI
Brown dwarf is a *disappointment* of their mother
What Kurzgesagt said about brown dwarfs I felt that
Awww. That poor Brown Dwarf didn't deserve that hate.
So a core collapse supernova happens after all hydrogen is converted to helium. So how are new stars born from the remains of supernovae when this material will not have any hydrogen in it.A new star will contain entirely hydrogen
Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disliked. Music too epic to focus on video.
And moree!!!!!!
Uy sutie
Red giants😱
Sun is tiny😢😥😨😣😠
Well actually our sun is a yellow dwarf some million years later we have a cooler but bigger red dwarf. As the sun gets cooler and cooler it starts to Become smaller. To become a white dwarf. But don't worry! Astronomers don't think this will happen for another 5 billion years! Them magic tree house books fun fact traders make me smart🙂
fun fact: at least 1 million 200 thousand people who have seen this has not subscribed I am dissapointed in you all
Potential video concept: Some people have trouble imagining that the Solar System is 4.5 billion years old. But the thing is, we're not just made of stardust - as Carl Sagan might remind us - but that stardust contains elements heavier than helium. We live on a rocky planet - many silicates - with nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere, and an iron core, with asteroids raining down gold on us. Our Sun cannot be a first generation star. Other stars lived and died in the vicinity, to spew out all that dust which became the accretion disc of our Solar System. Indeed, we find all the elements up to uranium - the heaviest naturally-occurring element in the universe - on our planet. The previous generation that brewed up our Solar accretion disc had to have gone "extreme supernova" to reach the dizzy heights of uranium in the periodic table. Or, indeed, it was multiple generations cooking up more and more heavy elements over time - that many stars lived and died, and went "mega-boom", before our Solar System could even be possible. We're often reminded that "space is big". But what could do with some illustration, I feel, is just how deep time really goes. Time is deep. You just wouldn't believe how mindbogglingly deep time goes. If you thought waiting for the No.8 bus took a long time, then that's peanuts compared to the age of the universe. You get the gist. Space gets all the attention, but time is also impressively deep too.
the music...
How can u do that to brown dwarfs star
That ending though
Fabulous video. Best video I've watch with my class!
aaaaaaww dont be so rude to the brown dwarfs they did their best

Amazingly well-done infographic. 😁♥️🌹 Leaning towards apple sucks, though. 🥺💔 There ARE UNBIASED ways to guide people to the store for the apps for THEIR device depending entirely on its OS, but you clearly wouldn't be interested in THAT, so... 🤨😐😑
Fun fact: If you roast a star it gets hotter

Agree totally
What if all stars exploded at same time.
“…this limitless universe is like the human body, all the members of which are connected and linked with one another with the greatest strength. How much the organs, the members and the parts of the body of man are intermingled and connected for mutual aid and help, and how much they influence one another! In the same way, the parts of this infinite universe have their members and elements connected with one another, and influence one another spiritually and materially.” “For example, the eye sees, and all the body is affected; the ear hears, and all the members of the body are moved. Of this there is no doubt; and the universe is like a living person. Moreover, the connection which exists between the members of beings must necessarily have an effect and impression, whether it be material or spiritual.” “For those who deny spiritual influence upon material things we mention this brief example: wonderful sounds and tones, melodies and charming voices, are accidents which affect the air-for sound is the term for vibrations of the air-and by these vibrations the nerves of the tympanum of the ear are affected, and hearing results. Now reflect that the vibration of the air, which is an accident of no importance, attracts and exhilarates the spirit of man and has great effect upon him: it makes him weep or laugh; perhaps it will influence him to such a degree that he will throw himself into danger. Therefore, see the connection which exists between the spirit of man and the atmospheric vibration, so that the movement of the air becomes the cause of transporting him from one state to another, and of entirely overpowering him; it will deprive him of patience and tranquility. Consider how strange this is, for nothing comes forth from the singer which enters into the listener; nevertheless, a great spiritual effect is produced. Therefore, surely so great a connection between beings must have spiritual effect and influence.” ”It has been mentioned that the members and parts of man affect and influence one another. For example, the eye sees; the heart is affected. The ear hears; and the spirit is influenced. The heart is at rest; the thoughts become serene, and for all the members of man’s body a pleasant condition is realized. What a connection and what an agreement is this! Since this connection, this spiritual effect and this influence, exists between the members of the body of man, who is only one of many finite beings, certainly between these universal and infinite beings there will also be a spiritual and material connection. Although by existing rules and actual science these connections cannot be discovered, nevertheless, their existence between all beings is certain and absolute.” “To conclude: the beings, whether great or small, are connected with one another by the perfect wisdom of God, and affect and influence one another. If it were not so, in the universal system and the general arrangement of existence, there would be disorder and imperfection. But as beings are connected one with another with the greatest strength, they are in order in their places and perfect.” (Abdu'l-Baha, Some Answered Questions, p. 245) - The Bahá’í’ Faith
